Update The design of the new Ketchikan library project was completed december 2011.

On April 20, 2011, The Design Team presented most recent design renderings to both the Library Building Committee and the community for input prior to advancing to 100% Design.

April 7, 2011 - The City Council adopted a motion authorizing Bettisworth Welsh Whitely, LLC to begin preparation of 100% Design Development Documents and for RISE Alaska to manage the design process and the CM/GC building contractor RFP selection process.

Jan 7, 2011 -  The City Council adopted a motion authorizing Bettisworth Welsh Whitely, LLC and RISE Alaska, LLC to begin preparation of 65% Design Development Documents.

The 35% Design Phase of the new KPL facility was completed in December 2010.  A final presentation by the design team to the Building Committee and the City Council was held December 16, 2010.  With City approval, the design team kicked off  65% Design Phase in January 2011.  Design Development is anticipated to be complete by the end of April 2011 and Construction Documents complete early summer 2011

Kick-Off of the 35% Design Phase for the new KPL  facility was held on September 24, 2010.  The design team of Bettisworth Welsh Whiteley met with library Staff, the Feasibility Committee, and members of the City Council and City Administration to receive review comments and further input on the Design Concept Study. Link to  A Public Forum for design comment is being scheduled for October 18, 2010,  35% Design is scheduled to be complete and approved by the end of 2010.

Through a petition initiative has been filed to build a new library facility within the downtown area, the City of Ketchikan, Feasibility Committee, and The Foraker Group Pre-Development Program are moving forward with a Design Study Concept relative to Copper Ridge site.Workshop Flyer

The Design Concept Study is the starting point on the path to final design. There will be ample opportunities for the community to continue to provide additional input on the new Ketchikan library facility.

The Design Concept Study will test the space program on the Copper Ridge site.

On May 26, 2010, a public workshop was conducted to vision and explore ideas for a new library facility located on the Copper Ridge site.

On August 5, 2010 a concept study that envisions how a 16, 250 square foot facility can be situated on the preferred Copper Ridge site was presented at
a City Council Meeting.  This concept study exercise;

  • Tests the space program to insure it meets the identified needs

  • Validates the site supports the goals of the project

  • Provides a higher degree of the confidence in preliminary estimated project cost

A professional construction cost estimator is currently developing an estimate for this concept.  An updated total project cost estimate is anticipated by the end of August 2010.
